Course Programme:
The German Book Centre
offers morning, evening and week-end courses in German language.
At present the courses offered are at the basic level comprising
4 semesters, each semester consisting of 120 working hours spread
over a period of 20 weeks.
The courses are based on the salient principles of modern linguistic
research following the communicative approach. They are handled
by experienced teachers of German who are conversant with the
teaching methods specific to Indian academic conditions. Information
about social and cultural developments in the Federal Republic
of Germany forms an integral part of teaching. At the same time
participants are also trained to present in German information
about corresponding developments in our country.

Course Content:
The basic level is
a progressively structured organic unit and it is offered as a
minimum programme of language learning. Solely on considerations
of academic convenience it is divided into the following 4 parts
and offered in 4 semesters. All participants are expected to complete
the 4 semesters, otherwise they will not be able to reach on adequate
degree of proficiency in German, whatever be their reasons for
learning the language.
Basic Level 1-
Part 1 is designed for absolute beginners. Participants
learn the basic sentence structures and vocabulary used in everyday
situations. They are also trained to formulate and answer simple
questions and to read and understand elementary texts.
Basic Level 1-
Part2 reinforces and expands on the vocabulary and grammatical
structures of part 1. Participants learn to understand important
information from authentic texts and to write simple personal
letters. They are also able to conduct a polite conversation.
Basic Level 2-
Part 1 consolidates and builds upon what has been learnt
in Basic Level 1. In this semester the participants finish learning
the grammatical basics and acquire an effective vocabulary of
a little over 1500 words. They are trained in all aspects of language
learning: listening, reading, speaking and writing.
Basic Level 2-
Part 2 Participants take part in conversations at a higher
level and learn to read and understand texts of medium difficulty.
They are trained to express themselves appropriately in a variety
of situations in everyday life both in their place of work and
in private circles. They also learn to write applications for
positions/higher studies, curriculum vitae etc., as well as short
official messages and reports.

Course Material and Attendance:
The basic level is
one organic whole and so only one text book is used throughout
the 4 semesters. wherever additional material is used by our teachers
photo-copies are provided to the participants. However, our work
with printed material constitutes only a minor part of class room
work. The major part of our work demands an active and direct
participation of the students. Under the supervision, co-ordination
and guidance of the teacher the students involve themselves in
a variety of partner and group activities: conducting question-answer
sessions, narrating, reporting, role-playing, conversing, discussing,
interviewing etc.,
In these circumstances
it is imperative that the participants ensure regular attendance
in the class-room. None of our participants will be entitled to
get a participation/ proficiency certificate unless he/she has
attended a minimum of 75% of the classes.
